Self Directed Learning(SDL) has been around a while. Some reports even show a decline in engagement in SDL-related content and practices over the past several years. But there are several social and technological conditions lining up – now and on the horizon – that will transform Self Directed Learning in the  corporate/professional realm.

What does corporate mobilization look like?

The way we work is amid disruption.  The World Economic Forum reports that across all major industries, rapid and inevitable technology advancements have already begun to change the way organizations function, and the way employees work.  Existing jobs will change, old roles may disappear, and completely new job functions with new skillsets will become essential.  Organizations across every industry will need to mobilize in order be vital and competitive.

Among the key and integral features that will define work and jobs in the years to come: Learning, Employee reskilling and retraining, Corporate plans for lifelong learning, and Corporations collaborating with educational institutions on learning content will be critical in managing through the disruptive forces across labour markets (Leopold, Ratchet, & Zahidi, 2018).

People learn differently in the professional world.

With greater focus on professional learning from the top-down, employees will need to actively learn throughout the days, months and years in order to keep engaged, up-to-date, and help organizations innovate.
